Catonsville comes up often when buyers start looking on the west side of the Baltimore area. Here's a plain guide to where it is, how the roads and transit work, what's nearby, and how to see homes, including upcoming open houses.
Where Catonsville Is
Catonsville is an unincorporated community in Baltimore County, on the western edge of Baltimore City. Baltimore County has no incorporated cities or towns, so Catonsville has no town government of its own. County government handles zoning, roads, parks, and libraries, and the U.S. Census Bureau tracks it as a census-designated place.
That matters when you shop. A "Catonsville" mailing address doesn't follow one official town line, so confirm the exact location, tax details, and school assignment for each address you're considering.
Getting Around
- I-695 (the Baltimore Beltway) runs through Catonsville, with interchanges at Frederick Road, Edmondson Avenue, and US-40. Just to the north, the Beltway meets I-70, which heads west toward Frederick.
- US-40 (Baltimore National Pike) is the main east-west commercial road, with shopping centers along it.
- Frederick Road (MD 144) is the older route. It began as the Frederick Turnpike between Baltimore and Frederick, and the original village of Catonsville grew up along it.
- Transit: MDOT MTA's CityLink Purple bus runs between Catonsville and City Hall in downtown Baltimore. Routes and schedules change, so check MDOT MTA before you count on a bus commute.
As with any area, drive or ride your real commute on a weekday at the time you'd actually travel.
Parks, Landmarks, and Everyday Places
- Patapsco Valley State Park, Hilton Area (1101 Hilton Avenue): Maryland DNR lists hiking and mountain-biking trails, including a trail down to the Patapsco River, plus a playground and nature center, picnic shelters, and a small campground with six mini-cabins and 12 basic campsites.
- Benjamin Banneker Historical Park & Museum (300 Oella Avenue): a Baltimore County Recreation and Parks site on the former farm of Benjamin Banneker, with a museum, a reconstructed log cabin, gardens, and trails that connect to the paved Number Nine Trolley Line Trail. Check Baltimore County Recreation and Parks for museum hours before you go.
- Catonsville Branch, Baltimore County Public Library (1100 Frederick Road): meeting room, public computers, and a free parking lot.
- Historic Frederick Road area: two National Register historic districts sit on either side of Frederick Road. The Old Catonsville Historic District, listed in 2002, is mostly detached single-family homes built from 1866 to 1950. The Central Catonsville and Summit Park Historic District, listed in 2006, covers homes built from 1869 to 1958.
- Colleges: the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) has its main campus in Catonsville at 1000 Hilltop Circle, and the Community College of Baltimore County has its CCBC Catonsville campus at 800 South Rolling Road.
Hours and facilities change, so check each official site before you visit.
What the Housing Looks Like
The Census Bureau's American Community Survey (2020–2024 estimates) counts about 16,900 homes in the Catonsville census area:
- About half are detached single-family homes.
- Close to one in five are attached single-family homes, such as townhouses and rowhouses.
- The rest are in buildings with two or more units, from duplexes to larger apartment and condo buildings.
The housing stock leans older. Close to half was built before 1960, and about one in five homes was built in 1990 or later. Those counts include rentals as well as owner-occupied homes. In practice, that means a search here turns up older homes in the historic districts near Frederick Road, mid-century single-family streets, townhome communities, and condos.
With older homes, budget time for a thorough home inspection and ask about the age of the roof, HVAC, electrical panel, and sewer line.
Catonsville Market Snapshot
Based on information from Bright MLS for July 1, 2026 through September 30, 2026; data is reliable but not guaranteed. Closed residential sales in the Catonsville postal area.
These figures mix every home type. A detached house and a condo sold in the same month pull the median in very different directions, so ask me for closed sales filtered to the type of home you want.
How to Find Open Houses in Catonsville
- My open houses: the Open Houses page lists the public open houses I'm hosting and is refreshed every Tuesday.
- Catonsville listings: search Catonsville homes for sale through Next Step Realty. Open house times show on the listings that have them.
- Confirm before you go. Open houses get canceled when a home goes under contract, so check the listing the morning of.
Two things to know when you walk in. In Maryland, the agent hosting an open house can meet the state's agency disclosure rule by posting a notice that they represent the seller, so assume they work for the seller. And you don't need to sign a buyer agreement just to talk with an agent at an open house. If you want an agent to take you on a private tour, a written buyer agreement comes first.
Schools
Catonsville is served by Baltimore County Public Schools. I don't rate or rank schools. Check boundaries and school information for a specific address at bcps.org.
